Task

Technodinamika Holding company of the Rostec State Corporation is a leading Russian developer and manufacturer of aircraft equipment. We had to create a video for them about space parachute systems for Cosmonautics Day. We had only 3 months to prepare a 10-minute documentary with 8 minutes of FULL CGI, which we had to create from scratch.

Ideas and solutions

Together with Technodinamika Holding company we created a film about the history and achievements of space parachute construction. We started by writing a script and evaluating the scope of work. We realized that we had to use a huge amount of CGI and the main difficulty was the almost complete lack of materials that we could use: very few photos and drawings were preserved, and the information was either outdated or lost. Together with Technodinamika we were gathering information bit by bit in order to draw spacecrafts and tell the story of cosmonautics from the first satellites. We talked a lot with the holding's engineers, requested various old drawings, visited the Museum of Cosmonautics, took photos of exhibits, did photogrammetry of busts near the museum, searched the books for information that could be used to create 3D models of spacecrafts involved in the video. The video consists of a series of scenes, and each one tells its own little story. As a result, about 40 people were working on the project — 5 teams, each of which was preparing its own part. It was important to organize such a large team quickly and clearly in order to maintain the same style as the video should not look like 5 different pieces. Valdis Pelsh, a professional skydiver, spoke in the film about the formation of the industry, about the features and types of systems. The well-known TV presenter and showman is a participant of the Russian, European and world records in big-way formation skydiving, a four-time Russian record holder and a candidate for master of sports in skydiving, so we decided to invite him to become the host of our project. The process of making the film was challenging and exciting as well because the client did not control the process and only wanted to see the final product. As a result, the client was very satisfied, and though it was planned to release the video only only on the Internet, it was also shown on TV. BTS: https://vimeo.com/359553557
