Task

Develop an efficient and inexpensive app for navigating app the new University building on Pokrovka

Ideas and solutions

First problem was the absence of the convenient and cheap indoor-navigation system for mobile devices. All existing options involve the Bluetooth-beacons or other technical devices, which increases the cost of implementation. We used an efficient and inexpensive positioning scheme — user navigates in the building using QR-codes scattered throughout the University. You need to scan the code closest to you and enter your destination (audience, dining room, employee of the HSE by name or position). The app builds the shortest route. Also the user can build a path by setting a point A and B in the app, and search some places by category (ATM, toilet, exit) is also available. We had to create the scheme manually. We took as a basis the floor plan of each separate building of the University to digitize it. The plans were compiled into a single map of the campus that was marked with a system of Waypoint Graphs, the network of short segments that connect the main points of the building: rooms, elevators, stairs, turns, forks in the corridors and atriums. In total 4,300 vertices and more than 9 million routes was created on the map. The start page at the bottom of the screen contains not only the usual search bar, but also fields for entering route points. This option allows the user to utilize any of the three specified scenarios with minimal actions. In addition the app's interface is based on solutions already available on the market (Google.Maps, 2GIS). It lowered the entry threshold for users. Result: The «HSE.Navigation» is already available on the AppStore and Google.Play. In the upcoming updates you will be able to build routes for people with limited mobility, routes without elevators. In near future the maps of other HSE campuses will be available in the app.
