Task

Dmitry Volkov is a businessman, venture capitalist, digital nomad, Doctor of Philosophy and author of the Non-Artificial Intelligence/Unartificial Intelligence/Not So Artificial Intelligence project, founder of SDV Arts & Science Foundation that supports the development of modern art and analytical philosophy. The goal of the virtual 3D exhibition is to create, probably, the first full-scale exhibition of modern art that provides a fully immersive experience

Ideas and solutions

The idea to turn the existing exhibition into a virtual 3D experience came up at the beginning of the pandemic: it became clear that there would be a lockdown and the real exhibition would be closed. What can be better than giving people forced to stay at home a possibility to visit the exhibition online? Tasks: A virtual 3D exhibition isn’t restricted by the location or the opening hours of a physical museum - the full-scale exhibition is alway available to anyone who wants to see it. As a temporary project the exhibition was a never-ending live stream, later it was put on the SDV Arts and Science Foundation website. It is very important to recreate modern art as naturally as possible so that a virtual visitor gets a fully immersive experience. Given a specific nature of modern art, a commentator or a guide is necessary. The stream version is accompanied by curators’ dialogues: they talk about general concepts of modern art and about each piece of art individually. On the website the exhibition features audio-guidance and navigation to make it easy for the user to move around. The main challenge: for future digitization, the real exposition had to be filmed in one day, on the last day the real exhibition was open. IMPACT As expected, the least successful platform for the project was VK. But it was very popular among Youtube users. Sophisticated modern art converted into a digital form turned out to be not so complicated. It is interesting for users! Both goals are achieved: promotion of modern art and attracting more attention to Dmitry Volkov’s art projects. The project is in line with the digitization trend that has been ongoing for the last 2-3 years. And the total spring lockdown increased engagement - staying at home people gladly dedicated the time they couldn’t find before to broaden their knowledge about art. ~ 300,000 views in the first 2 weeks 3,000 likes in total Average view duration - 7 minutes High engagement in comments
